TERM 1: DARE TO BE DIFFERENT

Key Question - Why is diversity important to the world?

Dare to be Different looks at significant journeys that have been made by different groups of people and significant individuals. The children will be looking at European migration before the Second World War and the cause and effect of such migration. This will involve a visit to 'The Journey' Holocaust Memorial Centre, near Newark, to learn first-hand what it was like to be Jewish child in Europe in the 1930s. The work also focuses on migration in the past century, looking at why people leave their homelands and what it would be like to be a refugee. We will be exploring equality and diversity in its widest sense. The children will explore what diversity means with a focus on discrimination, prejudice and stereotyping. This will lead us into looking at issues surrounding racism, sexism and xenophobia. 

 

SCIENCE LEARNING - LIVING THINGS AND THEIR HABITATS - CLASSIFICATION

Key Question - What makes each living thing diverse?

Our science work this term will focus on Living Things. We will be looking at how living things are classified and why classification is important. We will explore the similarities and differences between living things and look at what makes each species unique and diverse.

TERM 2: CHANGES

Key Question - Is nature's power more powerful than that of human beings?

Our curriculum areas focus on scientific and geographical change. Our residential visit will kick off our focus on this theme. We will be looking at different coastal habitats along the Norfolk coast to explore erosion and coastal change. Our residential visit will provide us with great opportunities to explore Britain’s varying and unique coastlines, which will help us to understand how erosion and deposition shape our land. The children will learn about erosion, transportation and deposition and look at how different coastal features are formed. We will be looking at how some coastal areas are defended and protected from the sea and what happens if not.  In addition to this, will be looking at how plants and animals have adapted and evolved over time to survive in different environments, looking at living things in coastal areas as well as living things in key biomes around the world.

SCIENCE LEARNING - EVOLUTION AND INHERITANCE

Key Question - Is nature's power more powerful than that of human beings?

Our science work this term will focus on adaptation and evolution. We will be looking at how plants and animals have adapted and evolved over time to survive in different environments, looking at living things in coastal areas as well as living things in key biomes around the world. Will will also look at inheritance and how living things pass on key characteristics and traits when reproducing, which over time can lead to evolution of different species. We will study the work of Charles Darwin and his theory of Natural Selection. 

TERM 3: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE

Key Question - Were the Ancient Maya the greatest stone age people?

Our curriculum will focus around the history of the ancient Meso-American civilisation of the Maya as we explore the key thread of continuity and change. We will be looking at how the Maya lived, the importance of maize and the cocoa bean in their lives, and studying how the rich and poor lived during this time. Our studies will see us looking at the evidence they left behind to teach us about their day-today- life before we look at the mystery of what happened to them in 900BC. We will explore Mayan food as we learn about maize and how it was used before making our own corn tortilla recipes. We will compare life at the time with life in Britain as we aim to identify who were the greatest Stone Age people. 

In our art work we will be sculpting Mayan artefacts out of clay and in music we will be looking at South American music as we learn and perform a class Samba.

 

SCIENCE LEARNING - THE HUMAN CIRCULATORY SYSTEM 

Key Question - How important is our blood?

In our science work, we will studying the importance of the circulatory system in our bodies. We will be looking at the important of the heart, lungs and blood in keeping us alive and what we can do to stay fit and healthy. The children will investigate how exercise affects our heart rate and why this happens

TERM 4: LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE

Key Question - What are volcanoes and how do they affect life on Earth?

This term we will be looking at volcanoes. We will be learning how and why they erupt and investigating how different types of volcanoes are formed. The children will learn where different volcanoes are located in the world and will look at how they affect life on Earth when they erupt. 

In music we will be looking at South American music as we learn and perform a class Samba and in DT we will be using our science knowledge to make electrical vehicles. 

 

SCIENCE LEARNING - ELECTRICITY

Key Question - What effect does changing the components have in an electrical circuit?

In our science work, we will studying electrical circuits. We will look at how to make simple circuits and then investigate what happens to the brightness of a bulb as we change circuits in different ways, adding and removing different components. 

TERM 5 : ANCIENT GREECE Part 1

Key Question - What is the legacy of the Ancient Greek civilisation?

This term we will focus our attention around the Ancient Greek civilisation. The children will explore what life was like during this time and how people lived their lives. We will focus on how men and women were viewed and treated, compared to modern societies and will be unpicking the key thread of ambition and aspiration as we learn what Ancient Greeks did that is still of significance today. We will study famous battles, the theatre, key philosophers and thinkers and look at the Olympic Games in order to gain an insight into what this ancient civilisation did that affects our lives today. 

We also have our SATs to complete will be working hard to make sure we know our stuff.

SCIENCE LEARNING - Light 

In our science work, we will studying Light. We will look at how we see things, sources of light and what happens to shadows as we alter light sources. We will look at the work of key scientists associated with their discoveries of light and how these have affected the world.

TERM 6: LEGACY

Key Question: What is the legacy of the Ancient Greek civilisation?

In our final term, we will be continuing our studies into Ancient Greece. We will focus on the legacy of the ancient civilisation and what they did and developed that is still relevant in the world today. We will focus on our own legacy as well, rehearsing and performing our end-of-year production and preparing for the Y6 Leavers' Service. 

We will be focusing on what we have learned in our time at Dunholme St. Chad's and what the future may hold as we transition to secondary school and begin the next part of our lives.
