Physical Education at Dunholme St Chad's Primary School
What is the intent of our PE curriculum?
To enable everyone to flourish and achieve their ambition at our school, the PE curriculum takes a multi-faceted approach and will:
- Strive for a curriculum that is accessible to all and develops the whole child. Encourage children to be conscious of the complexity and diversity of individuals and societies in the world around them and supporting equality for all in sport.
- It nurtures spirituality, curiosity, creativity and enjoyment.
- Challenge and support children through high quality teaching and learning to enable them to be the best that they can be and encourages them to improve and engage in competitive sports and activities.
- Be accessible for all pupils, to support them to develop as successful learners. PE is an integral part of school practices allowing all children in the school to gain a sense of achievement and develop positive attitudes towards themselves and others.
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities and give every pupil a foundation for lifelong physical activity, leaving primary school as physically active.
- Promote active and healthy lifestyles, physical skills, physical development and knowledge of the body in action, which supports their health and fitness and lead healthy, active lives.
- Engage all pupils in a programme of PE that encourages fitness, improves their strength and ensures they are physically active for sustained periods of time.
- There is a clear progression of skills from EYFS through the year groups to Year 6 where the children will develop their different cogs of learning: social, personal and applying physical.
The school uses the real PE scheme to teach our physical education. Due to copyright law we are unable to publish the progression in skills document.

Enrichment
We enter competitions and festivals where we take part or compete with and against other local schools. We aim to have every year group taking part in at leats one sports enrichment activity over the course of the academic year.
In all of these activities, we encourage pupils of embrace the School Games Values: Teamwork, Self-belief, Respect, Passion, Honesty and Determination.
The intent of all of the opportunities we provide, also follows one of the three School Games focuses:
Compete - Events for students who thrive on competition and who are determined to achieve their best. These event will be competitive with winners or winning elements. Potential progression may also be available.
Develop - Friendly competition events that do not just focus on the winning, but will focus on developing other skills and School Games Values. Participants will have the opportunity to support their personal development through challenges.
Belong - Non- competitive events that are participation focused. These would target children who lack confidence but, want to participate because they understand the benefits of physical activity.
This year we have taken part in the following enrichment activities along with the intent of each:
Year 5/6 Football fixtures - Develop
Year 5/6 Swimming gala - Compete
Year 5/6 Netball fixtures - Compete
Year 4 Cricket festival - Belong
Year 4 Triathlon - Belong
Year 3/4 Futsal - Compete
Year 3 Mini Olympics - Develop
Year 2 Multi Skills festival - Develop
Year 1 Multi Skills festival - Develop
For next academic year, the competitions we hope to take part in will appear here once they have been announced.
We also have PE enrichment days in school where every child gets to experience an inclusive sport or activity that they may not have tried. This year, we have had golf and boccia workshops along with a 'Road to Paris' Olympics themed carousel of activites. All of these workshops conclude with a competitive element to try out the new skills they have learnt. This competition allows children to earn points for their House.
Our PE Scheme
In our PE lessons, we use the Real PE scheme of learning. This is a totally new and holistic approach that makes PE and gym relevant, meaningful and challenging for EVERY child. It uses a 6 cog approach as shown below which links to key transferable life skills. This allows teachers to focus on one of these cogs in their lessons and use this for assessment purposes. Each cog is also linked to 2 differnet fundamental movement skills involving either agility, balance or coordination, which also form part of the assessment process. Each year group has a different set of resources, including an assessment focus, warm up activities, skills and application.
Sports Week
In term 6, we have a Sports week.
Last year, we focused on being a "good sportsperson. The children felt that this meant:
- listening to coaches and referees
- playing fair
- respecting other teams
- encouraging others
- If you win, don't boast about it
- If you don't win, accept this gracefully.
It has been wonderful to see all the children embracing this as they joined in with the week's activities.
Sports Day and Athletics morning
It is always great to see all the children take part in competitive sport and earn points for their house team. All our events promote teamwork and motivation.
Our races include:
- sack race
- beanbag race
- egg and spoon
- sprint
- hurdle
- relay
House teams compete against each other to win the house cup.
